Seven years of 89.3, The Current

Last night I got to go to a show at First Ave for The Current's 7th birthday celebration. I've always wanted to go, but the tickets go on sale to MPR members first, and almost always sell out before they're available to the general public. Well, I just so happen to have a friend who's a member, got tickets to both nights of the event, and offered to let me tag along for one night!

The first two acts were Low and Night Moves. Low was a bit slow for my taste, but I really liked Night Moves- 70s-ish rock 'n' roll.

The third act was Dead Man Winter, featuring members of Trampled by Turtles <3, Dave Simonett in particular. They were, of course, great.

And the final act- Tapes 'n Tapes. I've seen them, what? Maybe 6 times now? I don't even care because they're so good and I can dance like a maniac (as best as possible in a sold out show, ten feet from the stage).

They ended the show with a rendition of Purple Rain. Hooray for Minnesota music!

Oh, and First Ave got rid of that staircase that came down to the floor and blocked major sight lines. Made a HUGE difference in the flow of the place.

Some shows

Much much music this summer. A lot has been repeat (what's a weekend without another 4onthefloor show?!), but still very fun. Summary thus far:

Self descriptive, and a one-time thing. Lovely.

Final show for Sabby White and the Furnace.

Peter Wolf Crier for vita.mn's August music and movies series. Missed Free Energy the previous week, but this was a lovely show accompanied by "The Labyrinth" and David Bowie's package.

And, the following day, Peter Pisano from Peter Wolf Crier on stage with No Bird Sing, whose vocalist was in the audience the prior night at the vita.mn show. Awwww. Local love.

The 4onthefloor. ALWAYS a good show. Since April I've seen them five times, and I'll see em again this coming weekend, and I don't even care, cuz they make me so happy.

Farewell Continental- Justin Pierre's other band. I just love him. More on that to come.

This coming weekend will be a musical orgasm at Soundtown in Somerset. Flaming Lips, New Pornographers, DeVotchKa, Solid Gold, Okkervil River. And a bunch of bands I've seen recently: Heiruspecs (saw them in June), Roma Di Luna (July), Pink Mink (June), White Iron Band (June), Charlie Parr (July), The Goondas (July). Gotta love Minnesota summer music madness.

Heat wave

Epic heat for the last few days, but it's like that across half the country. It wouldn't be so bad, except I've been inside my un-air-conditioned apartment, on my computer, doing work for finals. And I have yet to unpack from the weekend. So, a 100+ degree apartment smelling of campfire it is! Main goal is to keep the kitties cool.

Precious angry wet kitten. He might look unhappy, but a dripping cold towel is a cat's best friend in this weather.

I just hope the weather will improve by Saturday. Trampled by Turtles at the Cabooze. The outdoor show of the summer I've been waiting for. Yum.
